勉強は最高の暇つぶしだよなーって考えてたら、学校(school)の語源は暇つぶしだったとふと思い出す。古代ギリシャ人よ、やっと追いついたぞ。

面白そうなのでちょっと調べてみた。

ランダムハウスだとギリシャ語のscholeが語源で「討論・教育に使う余暇・自由時間」。原義は「休息」。そこから「余暇」＞「講義」＞「学校」。

リーダーズだとscholeの意味として”leisure”, “discussion”, “lecture”が挙げられている。
