オンデマンド・ブックスでは、「いくらデジタル化されても、やっぱり紙の本を手に取って読みたい人は多い」（同社ＣＥＯのデイン・ネラー）とにらんで、エスプレッソの開発に挑んだ。「紙の本を、電子ブックリーダーが追いつかないところまで進化させる」のが狙いだ。注文はクリックひとつ、すぐさまカラフルな表紙がついた1冊の本が手に入る。デジタル戦略で遅れをとっている出版社と性急な消費者との間に割って入って、ビジネスを成り立たせようという計画だ。
